'To those who have fought for it, freedom has a flavor that the protected will never know.'

The Vietnam Era was one of the most tumultuous times in American history, with the war abroad and mass civil unrest at home. As a result, Vietnam veterans returned to a homecoming unlike any generation of veterans before or since. Simply put, the "welcome home" wasn't always welcoming due to opposition toward the war.

The United States began its involvement in the Vietnam War Aug. 5, 1964. The era ended May 7, 1975, by order of President Gerald Ford. Of those honorable men and women who served, 58,220 died and 153,000 were wounded.
